The Umbracle of Ciutadella Park

The Umbracle of Ciutadella Park, begun in 1883 by Josep Fontserè and completed by Josep Amargós i Samaranch after the 1888 Universal Exhibition, is an elegant pavilion designed to house tropical and subtropical species. Its structure combines cast-iron pillars and large iron arches that create a subtle play of light and shadow, ideal for the exotic vegetation it once sheltered: ficus, kentias, gardenias, yellow jasmines, among others. A central parterre and pathways once invited visitors to stroll and enjoy botanical contemplation. A masterpiece of 19th-century architecture, the Umbracle remains one of the park’s most distinctive and refined buildings.
