Monument in Homage to Picasso

The Monument to Picasso, inaugurated in 1983 on Passeig de Picasso, is a work by Antoni Tàpies together with architects Roser Amadó and Lluís Domènech i Girbau. Made of glass, metal, and assorted objects, the sculpture takes the form of a transparent cube containing an old sofa pierced with lances, accompanied by quotations from Picasso. Water runs across the glass surfaces, connecting with the surrounding pool. This tribute recalls Picasso’s youth in Barcelona and deliberately breaks away from the traditional idea of a commemorative monument. Restored in 2007, the work retains its provocative and unique character.
