The Sagrada Familia, whose construction began in 1882, is one of Barcelona’s greatest symbols and a masterpiece of Antoni Gaudí. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is expected to be completed in 2026, one hundred years after the death of its architect. Gaudí devoted more than 40 years to this unique project, envisioning a monumental temple with 5 naves, 3 façades, and 18 towers. These represent the 12 apostles, the 4 evangelists, the Virgin Mary, and at the highest point, Christ, crowned with a cross reaching 172 m, making the basilica the tallest church in the world. After Gaudí’s death in 1926, several architects continued his work, despite the losses caused by the Spanish Civil War. Today, thanks to donations and technological advances, construction is progressing rapidly. The interior is renowned for its play of light and colors through the stained glass windows, which change depending on the time of day. Visitors can also climb the towers: the Nativity façade (more authentic but with narrow spiral stairs) or the Passion façade (more accessible, with an elevator). A true spiritual and architectural masterpiece, the Sagrada Familia attracts millions of visitors each year and remains one of Barcelona’s most iconic landmarks.
