Remains of Barcelona's Roman Aqueduct

The demolition of a building on Carrer Duran i Bas in 1988 brought these remains of the Roman aqueduct to light. This 1st-century AD structure carried water from a mine in Montcada through Carrer de Sant Pere and Carrer dels Arcs. Four arch spans resting on piers were uncovered, integrated into the party wall. During the Middle Ages, once the aqueduct had fallen out of use, these arches were frequently reused as foundations for houses built up against them.
