Monument to Roger de Llúria

The monument to Roger de Llúria, inaugurated in 1888 on Passeig de Lluís Companys, is a work by sculptor Josep Reynés, set on a pedestal designed by Josep Vilaseca. Made of bronze on Montjuïc stone, the statue pays tribute to the admiral of the Crown of Aragon, one of the most significant military figures of the medieval era. With its larger-than-life dimensions and solemn style, it forms part of the Gallery of Illustrious Catalans, a group of sculptures commissioned to adorn the former Saló de Sant Joan. The work illustrates the transition from Romanticism to detailed Realism, with special attention to gestures and clothing, qualities that bronze casting could highlight particularly well.
