The monument to Francesc de Paula Rius i Taulet, the mayor who promoted the 1888 Universal Exhibition, stands at the junction of Passeig de Lluís Companys and Passeig de Pujades, opposite Ciutadella Park. Designed by architect Pere Falquès and sculptor Manuel Fuxà, it consists of an obelisk topped with the bust of the former mayor, flanked by figures symbolizing Barcelona, labour, commerce, and science. Originally, this 1889 project was intended to honour Ildefons Cerdà, creator of the Eixample plan, but public opposition caused it to fail. In 1896, the design was reused to commemorate Rius i Taulet, with some modifications. Medallions on the monument recall major symbols linked to the Universal Exhibition: the Columbus Monument, Gran Via, Ciutadella Park, and the Arc de Triomf.
