The monument to Antoni Viladomat (1678-1755), a major Catalan Baroque painter of the 18th century, stands on Passeig de Lluís Companys. Created in bronze and stone by Torquat Tasso i Nadal with a pedestal by Josep Vilaseca, the statue was inaugurated in 1887 as part of the sculpture program of the Saló de Sant Joan, placed between the Arc de Triomf and Ciutadella Park for the 1888 Universal Exhibition. Viladomat is known for pictorial cycles such as the Life of Saint Francis of Assisi (at the MNAC) and the Stations of the Cross in Mataró. His statue, depicting him with palette and brush, is one of the few to have survived the destructions of the Spanish Civil War in 1937, a symbol of his resilient spirit.
