Cafè Zurich

Located at the corner of Plaça de Catalunya and Pelai Street, Cafè Zurich is one of Barcelona’s most iconic establishments. Founded in 1862 under the name La Catalana, it later became a chocolate shop and around 1916 took its current name, given by an owner who had lived in Zurich. Transformed into a beer hall in the 1920s, it has since been a traditional meeting point for Barcelonians for over a century. Threatened by the construction of the El Triangle shopping center in the 1990s, it was rebuilt in 1998 within the new building, largely preserving its original appearance thanks to architects Federico Correa and Alfonso Milá.
