Maritime heritage
The Quai du Gabut Lighthouse, known as the “Red Lighthouse”, is one of La Rochelle’s maritime landmarks. Built in 1852, it once guided ships safely into the Old Port with its fixed red light. Modernized over time — electrified in 1936 and raised to 23 meters in 1963 — it now works in tandem with the Quai Valin Lighthouse (the “Green Lighthouse”) as a leading light, essential for navigation through the harbor channel. Listed as a Historic Monument since 2011, it stands as a fine example of 19th-century port engineering. Though it cannot be visited, this bright red lighthouse remains an iconic landmark of La Rochelle’s skyline. Standing at the foot of the Saint-Nicolas Tower, it enhances the charm of the lively Gabut district, famous for its colorful wooden houses and bustling terraces. Admiring it from the quay or while strolling through the area offers a unique glimpse into the city’s maritime heritage.
