From Generation to Generation

Sealed into the rampart wall since 1999, this bronze bas-relief by Bruce Krebs intrigues walkers strolling along La Rochelle's seafront. Across a plaque measuring roughly 1.4 by 1.2 metres, dozens of small figures with skulls opened like books are stacked upon one another. Each appears to read the mind of the one below, forming a living chain of knowledge transmission. Yet the artist slips in a warning: when one link refuses to read, the whole structure crumbles beyond repair. This poetic and philosophical work, tinged green by sea spray over the decades, invites reflection on the fragility of culture and each generation's responsibility in keeping it alive.
