Monument to Antonio López

The Monument to Antonio López, formerly located in Plaça d’Antonio López (now Plaça d’Idrissa Diallo), was erected in 1884 in honor of banker and businessman Antonio López y López, Marquis of Comillas. The monument, designed by Josep Oriol Mestres, featured a statue by Venanci Vallmitjana and several decorative reliefs created by Catalan sculptors, depicting the companies founded by López. The original statue, destroyed in 1936, was replaced in 1944 by a new version by Frederic Marès. In 2018, the statue was removed by the Barcelona City Council due to López’s links to the slave trade, sparking a public debate between moral condemnation and acknowledgment of his role as a patron of Catalan art and culture.
