Bust of Víctor Balaguer

The bust of Víctor Balaguer (1824-1901), Catalan writer and politician, was inaugurated on May 1, 1910 in the Parc de la Ciutadella. Sculpted by Manuel Fuxà on a pedestal designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch, it belongs to the series of literary monuments associated with the Jocs Florals. The engraved inscription recalls a phrase by Balaguer about the Catalan language: “Muerta dicen que es, mas yo la creo viva”. This monument highlights his role in the defense and promotion of Catalan as a literary language.
