The Old Port is the historic and emblematic heart of La Rochelle. A protected site since 1933, it is guarded by the famous medieval towers — the Tour Saint-Nicolas and the Tour de la Chaîne — which have framed its entrance since the 14th century. From the Middle Ages onward, this port made La Rochelle one of Europe's great maritime trading centres, playing a key role during the Hundred Years' War and in trade with the New World. Now converted into a pleasure port with around 320 berths, it retains a beautifully preserved and picturesque architectural setting. Its lively quays, lined with terraces and historic façades, make it the city's most popular spot for a stroll.
