Perched atop the medieval rampart walkway, Rue sur les Murs is one of La Rochelle's most photogenic promenades. Built between 1352 and 1387, this stretch of fortification links the Tour de la Chaîne to the Tour de la Lanterne, passing the Porte des Deux Moulins along the way. When Richelieu ordered the demolition of La Rochelle's defences after the Great Siege of 1628, he spared this curtain wall, deeming it a useful bulwark against English raids. Today the street is flanked by handsome ship-owners' mansions whose upper windows once looked out to open sea. On one façade, a caravel carved in stone recalls the city's thriving maritime past. The sweeping view down over the Old Port channel and the Gabut quarter makes this elevated lane an unmissable walk.
