Inaugurated on May 19, 1988, the Île de Ré Bridge connects La Rochelle to Rivedoux-Plage across nearly 3 kilometers above the Atlantic Ocean. A true architectural feat, it rises 42 meters high, offering a spectacular view over the Pertuis d’Antioche. Before its construction, travelers reached the island by ferry, a scenic but often endless journey during the busy summer months. Its opening marked a revolution for the island’s residents, providing smooth and permanent access — vital for the island’s economy and daily life. A masterpiece of modern engineering, the bridge withstands strong winds, heat, and even earthquakes. Today, it remains a symbol of the connection between La Rochelle and the Île de Ré, linking the mainland to the bright, tranquil landscapes of Ré la Blanche.
