Fontaine du Pilori

The Fontaine du Pilori is one of the oldest civic monuments in La Rochelle, listed as a historic monument since 1925. Situated at the corner of Rue du Minage and Rue du Cordouan, its name is said to recall a pillory that once stood on this spot, though some sources link it to the 'Puits Lori', a well mentioned as early as 1565 during the entry of King Charles IX into the city. Originally buried six metres below street level, the fountain was raised to ground level in 1711 and then rebuilt from plans drawn up by the engineer de Vilennes in 1722. A small gem of urban heritage, often overlooked by visitors.
