The Cascada Monumental, located in the northern part of Ciutadella Park, is one of Barcelona’s most iconic and photographed landmarks. Designed by architect Josep Fontserè and inaugurated in 1881, it was completed in 1888 for the Universal Exhibition, with the addition of decorative and sculptural elements. Inspired by Marseille’s Palais Longchamp, its centerpiece is the Naixement de Venus, surrounded by nymphs and seahorses, and crowned by the spectacular Quadriga de l’Aurora. Although criticized at its opening for its simplicity, the fountain soon gained ornamental richness and prestige. The young Antoni Gaudí, then still a student, contributed to the project by working on the hydraulic system and leaving his mark with small lizard sculptures. Later, Carles Buïgas, renowned for the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc, enhanced it with lighting. Today, the Cascada Monumental is regarded as the true “jewel” of the park and an unmissable stop for visitors.
