Santa Caterina Market

The ground on which the market stands was formerly occupied by the convent of Santa Caterina — with its Gothic church and cloister — demolished between 1823 and 1837. A neoclassical market by Josep Mas i Vila and Josep Buxareu replaced it in 1848; its porticoed façade and side walls were retained and absorbed into the present building. The contemporary reconstruction, inaugurated in 2005 by Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue, is defined by an undulating coloured mosaic roof — executed by Toni Cumella — carried on a metal framework of organic lines, with wooden interior finishes throughout.
