Palau de la Música Catalana: La Cançó Popular

Commissioned in 1906 by Domènech i Montaner to a very detailed brief, this sculptural group by Miquel Blay is the most imposing element in the entire ornamental scheme of the Palau de la Música. Set at the corner of the building at balcony balustrade level, its overflowing composition brings to mind the prow of a vessel. The group represents La Cançó Popular through a young woman at its centre, surrounded by figures embodying the Catalan people — fishermen, farmers, people of all ages — with Saint George, patron of Catalonia, as a protective presence in the background.
