Palau Aguilar

Of ancient origin — its earliest traces date to the 12th century — Palau Aguilar was entirely rebuilt in the 15th century when Berenguer d'Aguilar owned it. Its architecture is attributed to Marc Safont, the master who designed the patio of the Palau de la Generalitat. It is one of the most remarkable examples of civil Gothic architecture in Catalonia. Its courtyard is exceptional: an open-air staircase leads to a gallery of pointed arches on numulitic columns, framing richly sculpted windows and a flamboyant doorway adorned with vegetal motifs and a coat of arms borne by five angels. A relief of Saint Christopher stands to one side. The façade windows, finely carved in Renaissance style, date from the 16th century. During restoration in the 1960s, important 13th-century murals depicting the conquest of Majorca were uncovered — now preserved at the MNAC.
