Metronom — The Warehouse Turned Art Temple

With its single-storey facade punctuated by five large arcades, its bracketed cornice and its openwork balustrade attic, the building at Fusina 9 integrates perfectly into the nearby Porxos de Fontseree ensemble — even though it was not designed for this. Projected in 1918 by architect Josep Font Guma, it was intended for the warehouses and offices of the Companyia d'Industries Agricoles, which operated an alcohol factory in Poblenou. In 1947 the offices moved to carrer Balmes, leaving the building for pulp-drying activities alone. It served as a storage facility until 1982, when it was entirely rehabilitated to become an art space housing the Tous-De Pedro collection and various temporary exhibitions. The restoration won the FAD Architecture Prize in 1984, one of Catalonia's most prestigious design awards.
