Homage to the Victims of Nazism

Every May 5th, the date marking the liberation of Mauthausen camp in 1945, a tribute is paid to the Spanish deportees in Nazi camps at the Monument to the Deportees in Ciutadella Park. Organized by the City of Barcelona together with the Amical de Mauthausen and Amical de Ravensbrück associations, the ceremony includes readings, commemorative speeches, and a floral offering. Officially established in 2019 as the Day of Tribute to Spanish Deportees and Victims of Nazism, this date recalls that nearly 10,000 Spaniards were interned, around 7,500 in Mauthausen. Stripped of their nationality by the Franco regime, more than 5,000 died there and in other camps, leaving a lasting legacy of sacrifice and struggle for freedom and democracy.
