Funerary Site of Plaça Vila de Madrid

This Roman necropolis was discovered in 1954 beneath the site formerly occupied by the Carmelite convent of Santa Teresa. It is tentatively dated to between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD. A total of 85 graves were identified, arranged along either side of an ancient road, fragments of whose paving also survived. The burials vary in type: semi-cylindrical stone casings, stone-and-mortar tumuli, and tile-covered inhumations. During the replanning of the square between 1998 and 2008, a large portion of the graves was preserved in situ at a lower level visible from the garden. An adjacent Interpretation Centre displays objects recovered from the site.
