The Church of Sant Miquel del Port, built between 1753 and 1755 by order of the Marquis of la Mina, was designed to accompany the creation of the Barceloneta district. Dedicated to the Archangel Saint Michael (the Marquis’s patron), it stands out for its baroque façade with three classical orders (Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian), featuring a niche with a statue of Saint Michael. Originally designed with a square plan and central dome, the church was expanded between 1850 and 1863 by the architect Elies Rogent, who gave it its current layout of three naves. Its interior, once richly decorated with gilding and stained glass, housed the mausoleum of the Marquis of la Mina and a beautiful baroque altar. The Civil War caused the destruction of many artworks and statues, but the church was later restored, notably with the reinstatement of the statue of Saint Michael in 1992. The building preserves an important artistic heritage, with colorful stained glass windows, symbolic decorations, and a sober interior following 20th-century restorations. As a symbol of the neighborhood, Sant Miquel del Port is also tied to a festive tradition: the Canó de la Barceloneta, created in 1912 by Pancraç Farell. During celebrations, this festive cannon fires volleys of sweets, a custom that remains today an emblem of the neighborhood’s popular festivities.
