Bust of Joaquim Vayreda

The bust of Joaquim Vayreda (1843-1894), a painter from Olot, was inaugurated in 1915 at the initiative of the Junta de Museus. Created by Manuel Fuxà with a pedestal by Pere Falquès, it depicts the artist wearing a cape, a large bow at his neck and a beret, giving him a bohemian air. Originally placed in front of the Palace of Fine Arts, it was relocated in 1945 to the former arsenal of the Ciutadella (now the Parliament of Catalonia) after the building was demolished. This monument is one of the few dedicated to a painter, since most of Barcelona’s sculptural tributes were devoted to writers.
