Built between 1329 and 1383 in the heart of the Ribera district, the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar reflects the prosperity of medieval Barcelona, driven by the maritime expansion of the Crown of Aragon. Constructed on the site of the former Romanesque church of Santa Maria de les Arenes, it was funded by donations from residents, guilds, and notables, and completed in a record 54 years, thanks to the collective effort of the neighborhood. A symbol of Catalan Gothic, its harmonious architecture bears witness to the city’s commercial and spiritual power in the 14th century. It has endured through the centuries, marked by tragic events such as the 1936 fire, which destroyed stained glass, furnishings, and archives. Since then, continuous restoration work has been carried out to preserve its exceptional heritage.
