Christian presence in Barcelona is documented as early as the 3rd–4th centuries, with the martyrdom of Saint Eulalia. The first paleochristian basilica was built in the 4th century, dedicated to the Holy Cross, and in 877 it received the relics of Saint Eulalia. After suffering damage during the Arab invasions, a Romanesque cathedral was built in 1046 and consecrated in 1058. On its foundations stands the current Gothic cathedral, begun in 1298 and completed in the 15th century, with the cloister finished in 1448. The neo-Gothic façade and its towers were added in the late 19th century, funded by industrialist Manuel Girona, and completed in 1913 with the dome. Today, the cathedral represents a unique blend of paleochristian, Romanesque, and Gothic heritage, bearing witness to over 1,700 years of Barcelona’s religious and cultural history.
